Disley’s senior teams ushered in the 2017 UKFast Cheshire Cricket League season with a pair of low-scoring wins, belying conditions that were as batsman-friendly as you’ll find on an April opening weekend.
The 1stXI made the short trip to Ashton-on-Mersey and broke their hoodoo against the men from the Beets, wasting little time after winning the toss as Toby Carson (4-21) – who struck with his second delivery – and Adam Burgess (1-13) reduced the home side to 1-3.
Keeper Will Ritchie was being kept busy as the Disley bowlers found a testing line, new boy Jamie Henderson (3-6) bowling a lively pace and soon finding a pair of edges to find himself on a hat-trick with Ashton 38-6.
The home side dug in to eventually grind out a total of 83 as Disley’s outfield catching failed to match their ground fielding, but a six-man attack including three spin options kept a lid on things to such an extent that even an early-season wobble with the bat was no undue concern.
Max Driscoll fell early to a stunning caught and bowled from Johnson (5-30) who would collect all of the Rams wickets to fall. He couldn’t add the crucial scalp of Jake Reynolds though who marked his captaincy bow by carrying his bat for a free-scoring 46* (9×4, 0x6, 61b) as all other recognised batsmen in the fixture inexplicably struggled.
There was a similar story at the DASC where again runs were at a premium, this time to such an extent that the 2ndXI successfully defended a total of just 89 all-out as both the Disley and Stockport Trinity bowlers excelled.
Debutants Shez Mirza (17) and Reuben Cutts (13) added some late impetus to a flagging Rams innings, joining Stew Reynolds as the only men in double figures. It wasn’t what skipper Alex Dyson was looking for after winning his first toss of the year, but an inspired display in the field after tea made
Raza Karamat (5-21) made up for his first-innings duck with an inspired spell of pace bowling, ably supported by youngsters Rooney (1-10) and Gilmour (2-16). This allowed Cutts (2-5) to complete a promising debut by cleaning up the tail, Trinity dismissed for just 52.
